Born in Monterey, I’m a sixth generation Californian. With the exception of a few years in Hawaii, Tennessee, and Chicago, most of my life has been spent in the Golden state. My family and I continue to live here. Dramatic contrasts lie within California, with coastal landscapes, majestic mountains, vast deserts, lush farmlands, orchards, and miles of vineyards which border sleek, futuristic skyscrapers in Silicon Valley, south of the “city by the bay.”
Baptized and raised in the Catholic church, I graduated from Jesuit Santa Clara University with a degree in biology and a passion for history. At the University of Chicago, I completed a Masters in History of Science and Medicine and spent a year on the related Ph.D. I’ve spent twenty years in high tech; first at Apple, which often hired people from diverse educational backgrounds, and after that at a number of other industry leaders including Oracle, Sun, and Cisco. Along my career path, I worked on an MBA, and I have been certified in Six Sigma, a rigorous method for process excellence and continuous improvement designed to achieve quality through statistical tools, metrics, and analysis. Six Sigma is used by most Fortune 500 companies, and was developed by Motorola and General Electric in the 1980s. The methodology owes much to quality pioneers such as Dr. W. Edward Deming.
Several years ago, I completed a post-graduate course in research methodology at Duke University Medicine’s world renown Center for Spirituality, Theology & Health, founded by the brilliant and compassionate healer, Dr. Harold Koenig.
My training in the scientific method, quality methodology, analysis, and research are valuable tools to help ground the discussion in Healing Intelligence (IQ).
I have always been a “believer”. From the time I was a child, people of strong faith have surrounded me. I have always felt God’s presence in my life. My great-grandmother taught Christian Sunday school, my grandmother was a devout Catholic and schoolteacher. My father had a Damascus-Road type of experience when he was a young man; as a result, he faithfully attended church throughout the rest of his life, often daily. My father was a great influence on me and others. He always had a smile and warm regard for anyone he met. He served in different capacities at our church, as I did, on the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic minister. My catechism and theology courses in grammar school, high school, and college were followed by Bible study as an adult and attendance at both Catholic and Christian churches.
I created the mini-devotional, “Keys to Prayer®” which provides scriptures in a small format book that fits in pockets and purses, so it can go with a person anywhere. Key passages of the Bible are organized by topic and chapter & verse, for quick reference in times of trouble, or when a quick faith boost might be needed. The Word is my daily companion.
